NORTH CAROLINA MUSEUM OF ART

GLAXOSMITHKLINE
CURATORIAL FELLOWSHIP

The North Carolina Museum of Art invites applications
for the GlaxoSmithKline Curatorial Fellowship for the
2005-06 academic year. The Museum (See
www.ncartmuseum.org) possesses an exceptional
collection of art ranging from Pre-dynastic Egypt to
the present, with particular strengths in European and
American painting and international contemporary art.
Of particular note are the Samuel H. Kress Collection
of Italian paintings and sculpture, and the Valentiner
collection of German Expressionist paintings.

The GlaxoSmithKline Fellow will be considered a
professional member of the Museum’s curatorial staff
with ready access to curators, educators,
conservators, librarians, and members of other museum
departments. The Fellow’s time will be divided
between general curatorial work and one or more
specific research projects under the supervision of
senior curators. Research will focus either on the
permanent collection or on one or more upcoming
temporary exhibitions. Permanent collection projects
include primary research for a projected series of
scholarly catalogues of the Museum’s collection.
(Currently in development are catalogues for Egyptian
and Classical art; Italian painting and sculpture; and
Netherlandish, Dutch, Flemish, and German painting and
sculpture).

An annual stipend of $20,000 is provided in addition
to a research travel allowance. The NCMA Curatorial
Fellow will be expected to work at the NCMA for an
average of 25 hours per week during the academic year
(September – May).

Eligibility: Consideration will be given to candidates
in the fields of European and American art, including
modern and contemporary art. Eligible candidates must
have received their M.A. degree in art history and
have completed all coursework and examinations
required for the Ph.D. by September 2005. They must
be actively engaged in the research and writing of the
dissertation. The most competitive candidates will
have a demonstrated interest in a museum career.

Application procedure: Applications must include a
cover letter and the following: a statement (not
exceeding 1000 words) describing area of research and
potential relationships to the Museum’s collections; a
current curriculum vitae; three letters of
recommendation (academic and professional); and a copy
of a published paper or other writing sample.
Applications must be received by March 1, 2005. They
should be mailed to: Lauren Harry, Curatorial
Department, North Carolina Museum of Art, 4630 Mail
Service Center, Raleigh, NC 27699-4630. Please direct
questions to [log in to unmask]
Interviews will be held in Raleigh during March/early
April and a decision announced by April 15, 2005.

This fellowship is underwritten by a grant from
GlaxoSmithKline.
