Dear Mia,
Just wanted to offer a different perspective on Gretchen's comment that about no internships needed for the online program at GWU - an internship is one good way to get your foot in the door at an institution. In fact, you may get access to larger museums with more job opportunities through a university-negotiated internship program.

Perhaps reviewing the internship connections and job placement histories of the various certificate programs would be a useful way to evaluate their benefits for you?
Good luck with the job search,
Manon

Dear Colleagues,

=20

Has anyone gone through the exercise of determining the value of 1 =
square foot of processed storage space, i.e. how much is the space =
really worth for an object that has been acquired, documented, =
photographed, conserved, etc. ?

=20

I would be curious to hear your results if you have.

Subject: Re: cost of 1 square foot of processed museum storage space

Patti - based on significant collections management work we've done,
beginning in approximately the year 2000, we calculated that the cost p=
er
artifact is $18 to properly store, document & catalogue and photograph =
each
object. That cost excludes the cost of the building envelope, ongoing =
HVAC
costs and what the private sector would view as an ongoing storage fee.=
  We
didn't work out the cost per square foot.

Dear Colleagues,

Has anyone gone through the exercise of determining the value of 1 squa=
re
foot of processed storage space, i.e. how much is the space really wort=
h
for an object that has been acquired, documented, photographed, conserv=
ed,
etc. ?

I would be curious to hear your results if you have.

If you just want something cheap and easy, the least expensive frames I have
encountered are from www.framesbymail.com The economy frames end up being
even less expensive than the hobby lobby ones, and they ship very quickly.

Good luck,

Hi Kerry,
We have offered day trips to other museums and it seemed the best to
charge what would cover the cost to us and perhaps just a little more.
We thought of it as a service that we offer our membership (and offered
it to non members too, at a slightly higher price), not as a fund
raiser. I hope this helps...... Also, I'm not sure if your membership
tends to be of a certain age, but an eight hour travel day might be a
lot for some people - they just get worn out!

Happy travels!

I work at Minnetrista, a museum in Muncie, Indiana. Bimonthly we offer
trips to semi-local destinations as part of our public programming. We
offer these trips at a reduced rate to our members, usually $5-$10
cheaper.

The cost of these trips usually cover cost of admissions, food expenses
(if any) and somewhat the time and gas expenses, though that part is
usually low-balled. We also try to incorporate some sort of activity for
the drive, could be a planned discussion, could be a crossword puzzle,
could be pictures about whatever the topic for the day is.

Example: If we're taking a trip to 2 museums, each that have a $5
admission price per person, and we're bringing boxed lunches that cost
$6 each, then our normal fee for the trip would probably run (depending
on distance) something like $25/member, $30/non member.

I hope this helps.

For those that have begun these trips: I have a question about
transportation. Do you have your own vehicle which the museum owns, or do
you rent a 15 passenger van? Who does the driving? How is insurance
covered? What kind of liability do you have?
Thanks- I look forward to the response.

Subject: questions about certificates/jobs

Hello:

I have been reading through the archives and have some questions about mu=
seum jobs and certificates. I know there is no one right answer, but woul=
d love to hear opinions from others.

I have both a BA and MA in American history and have completed two intern=
ships during undergrad. I have been working as an admin in an unrelated a=
rea for the past few years but really want to get back into a history mus=
eum. Do you think obtaining a certificate is worth my while and will help=
my chances in landing a job?

I have found two certificates in the Boston area: Tufts Univ and Regis Co=
llege. Has anyone heard about the Regis certificate? It requires 4 classe=
s and 2 internships. Are there any others in this area?

What is the average pay range for starting out in the Boston area ?I know=
of several small museums in the surrounding towns. Do you think there ar=
e more opportunities in this general area, or is there more competition?

Any other info welcome and appreciated.

Thank you so much!

Mia,
It sounds as though you and I are twins! I also have a BA and MA in American History and thought for sure I would be a shoe in for a job, but I was mistaken! Desparately seeking museum employment I started working part time giving tours in Old Town Alexandria, VA and eventually starting volunteering with the collections. I also started the Museum Collections Management and Care Certificate Program at George Washington University. This program has been great because it is all online and therefor can be done from your Boston location and the best part is, no internships. You do have to have access to a museum collections so my suggestion would be to go out and try to find a small local museum that is seeking volunteers. It's not ideal but it's a great way to get a start. Most will only require you to volunteer once a month. This way you get a bit of museum experience.
Good luck,
Gretchen

I have to say all, you have the same backgrounds as I once had,
academically, but while I admit my entry into museum work was somewhat
circuitous, I feel I am partly where I am because of my willingness to
relocate. There's a lot of jobs out there, but you might not be looking in
Oklahoma or Nebraska or Wyoming.....

Just some food for thought.

Mia,
It sounds as though you and I are twins! I also have a BA and MA in Americ=
an
History and thought for sure I would be a shoe in for a job, but I was mist=
aken!
Desparately seeking museum employment I started working part time giving t=
ours
in Old Town Alexandria, VA and eventually starting volunteering with the
collections. I also started the Museum Collections Management and Care
Certificate Program at George Washington University. This program has been
great because it is all online and therefor can be done from your Boston
location and the best part is, no internships. You do have to have access =
to a
museum collections so my suggestion would be to go out and try to find a sm=
all
local museum that is seeking volunteers. It's not ideal but it's a
great way to get a start. Most will only require you to volunteer once a m=
onth.
This way you get a bit of museum experience.=20
Good luck,
Gretchen

Subject: Re: Fees for member trips?

At my museum, we have our own passenger van that we usually use for
trips. However, I have been told that in past years, depending on the
length of the trip and the number of people for it, that we have rented
vans and/or chartered busses.

I don't know much about the insurance stuff, since that is way out of
the jurisdiction of my department (programming). BUT, I do know that I
was told that we have the sort of insurance policy that covers all of
our institutional vehicles fully, including staff and passengers. I
can't give more detail than that, though.

Hope that's of some use to you.

For those that have begun these trips: I have a question about
transportation. Do you have your own vehicle which the museum owns, or
do
you rent a 15 passenger van? Who does the driving? How is insurance
covered? What kind of liability do you have?
Thanks- I look forward to the response.

Hi Kerry,
We have offered day trips to other museums and it seemed the best to
charge what would cover the cost to us and perhaps just a little more.

Dear Colleagues,

I am pleased to attach a draft programme for the annual conference of
ICOM's International Committee on University Museums and Collections
(UMAC), which this year is taking place at the University of Manchester,
UK, from 16-20 September. We very much want this to be an event which
draws both a truly international group of participants, so I do
encourage you to come along. We have set the registration fee at a very
reasonable level, and there will be plenty of opportunities to visit
museums in Manchester and Liverpool and to meet colleagues.

Hello Mia-

Most historic house and/or history museums are quite happy to employ person=
s who hold an MA in American History. Over the past 59 years our staff has =
included professionals holding MAs and PhDs in history=2C art history and a=
nthropology. We hired one person who had a Masters in Museum Studies from =
a prestigious program who considered herself the only "museum professional"=
ever employed here. She was a complete disaster. She had book knowledge=2C=
but she had absolutely no idea how historic house museums work.

Especially since you have some past experience in museums (in addition to y=
our educational background)=2C you should be able to find a museum position=
. I would look at small museums=2C archives=2C state and municipal museums=
=2C etc.

You don't say what kind of position you are looking for (programs=2C curato=
rial=2C administrative=2C etc.)=2C but the AAM does a survey of salaries.

Good luck.

Dear All -

If you and partner organizations have an exhibit and programming opportunity
that might create market transformation in your area for renewable energy
and reduced greenhouse gas emissions through other venues, then this is an
opportunity for you. I think museums would be a GREAT venue for this.

I'd imagine a great application would include a museum or museums with a mix
of energy providers and/or service companies who collaborate on an exhibit
that extends into the municipality and the home. This means that if your
exhibit talks about renewable energy and energy conservation, the
programming has components that include community competitions for
percentage reduction in energy use (among schools, businesses, etc.) or
schools competing in composting; how about public discussions of green power
purchasing options in your area; or that highlights of community success
stories - farmers using cow power or solar power as a way to convince others
to do the same.

Of course - you have one week to submit via grants.gov..but just in case:

EPA Offers Funding for Greenhouse Gas Management, Deadline August 6

EPA's Climate Protection Partnerships Division has announced a request for
proposals for "cost-effective approaches to reducing greenhouse gas
emissions through energy efficiency, clean energy, and corporate greenhouse
gas management." Eligible entities include nonprofit organizations and state
and local governments. Major areas for support

include:

-educating the business and consumer sector on the benefits of improving
energy performance.

-market transformation projects that will increase public awareness of the
health benefits and cost savings associated with the use of energy efficient
products and services.

-regional outreach and education on the benefits of renewable energy,
encouraging state and local governments to make green power purchases.

The total estimated funding for this competitive opportunity is
approximately $6,000,000. EPA anticipates awarding 1-10 grants, ranging in
annual value from $40,000 to $90,000, and 4-10 cooperative agreements,
ranging in annual value from $100,000 to $250,000. Awards are subject to the
availability of funds and quality of evaluated proposals.

Applications are due August 6, 2008. To view the full Request for Proposals
please visit:

http://www.epa.gov/air/grants_funding.html#0804cppd

Applicants are encouraged to submit proposals through http://www.grants.gov
<http://www.grants.gov/> .
