IMLS Swears in National Museum and Library Services Board Members,
Announces Conservation Initiative during Anniversary Celebration

Washington, DC--Five individuals joined the National Museum and Library
Services Board on September 27th at the Institute of Museum and Library
Services' ten-year anniversary celebration. The board's five new members
had been nominated by President Bush and recently confirmed by the
United States Senate.

U.S. Archivist Allen Weinstein administered the oath of office to the
board members before a gathering of representatives from federal
cultural and education agencies, national service organizations, and
congressional staff. Held at the Library of Congress, the event included
presentations by the hosts, IMLS Director Anne-Imelda Radice; Director
John Cole of the Center for the Book; and Adair Margo, Chairman of the
President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities. Bruce Cole, Chairman
of the National Endowment for the Humanities; and Dana Gioia, Chairman
of the National Endowment for the Arts, were also hosts of the event.
U.S. Representative Mark Udall (CO-02) spoke after the oath was
administered.

In addition to honoring the new board members, Dr. Radice announced that
during its tenth anniversary year, the Institute would place a national
spotlight on collections in the United States with a national
conservation initiative. The centerpiece of the initiative will be a
summit next summer to develop new approaches to saving collections.

"It is clear that working together we can make a difference. Collections
care and emergency preparedness are top priorities. The IMLS summit, and
our overall conservation initiative, will examine strategies for
immediate improvement."
