I have been researching various forms of lighting currently being
marketed to the museum field, and have found fiber-optics to be a viable
(though initially somewhat expensive) option. They seem to be energy
efficient, as one bulb can be used to send light to several different
points. The up-front costs are greater than conventional lighting (or
even LED), but the long-term benefits might make it worth it. There are
several companies producing fiber-optics, the most intriguing one being
NoUVIR Research: http://www.nouvir.com/
NoUVIR argues, as Marc Williams was saying, that it is not just UV that
causes damage, but Infrared (IR) light as well. They have published the
results of their extensive research on the subject, which is quite
convincing to this lighting novice. They market a product that
supposedly eliminates both UV and IR (invisible light energy that is
absorbed by objects and thus causes damage), allowing only visible light
through.
I know I'm starting to sound like a NoUVIR salesman, so please note that
I have not personally tried their product--I am relying only on the
research they provide through their website and in the written
literature they were gracious enough to send me. Such as:

As far as the expense of this system, I suppose it would even be
possible to pursue grants to help offset the costs, since it is an
effort to protect and properly care for artifacts.
Anyone have any experience with NoUVIR in particular?

This subject may have been discussed before but I'm going to ask the

Global warming is a high priority topic these days and will become even
more so in the future. Currently, I'm changing all of my light bulbs in
my
house to the new kind that are more energy efficient and last

longer.
Changing the lighting in my museum is a different story. Has anyone
begun
to think about this and if so, is there literature available or does AAM
have anything available to help us begin this changeover in our
workplace?
