The National Museum of the American Sailor is currently accepting applications for an Education intern during the summer of 2017. The museum’s Education Department focuses on STEM education as it relates to the U.S. Navy. Under the supervision of the museum’s Education Specialist, the intern will learn and perform career-developmental duties such as:

-Working with Common Core Standards as prescribed by the Illinois State Board of Education
-Researching STEM concepts as they relate to the U.S. Navy
-Creating a one (1) hour lesson plan related to STEM concepts which will be turned into formal classroom instruction.  -Examples of past STEM programming at the National Museum of the American Sailor can be found here (https://www.facebook.com/nationalmuseumoftheamericansailor) 
-Documenting findings and processes as the lesson plan is developed.

Skills Required:

-Curiosity and a willingness to learn.
-Basic knowledge of principles of Science, Engineering, Technology, and Math (STEM).
-Ability to organize data into an educational outline.
-Strong public speaking skills.
-Familiarity with the Microsoft Office suite of software, particularly PowerPoint and Word documents.
-Ability to work independently.
-The physical ability to climb stairs and ladders, lift up to 50 pounds, stand, sit, kneel, and occasionally handle materials covered with dust or debris.

-A resume outlining your educational, professional, and volunteer experiences
-A one-page personal statement (use this essay to tell us how an internship at the National Museum of the American Sailor will advance your academic/career goals)
-One letter of recommendation
-A writing sample of not less than 1,000 words
Internship application packets for Summer 2017 are due no later than March 1, 2017.
