Mary L. Chute Named Deputy Director of the Institute of Museum and Library
Services for Library Services

Washington, DC--- The Institute of Museum and Library Services announces the
appointment of Mary L. Chute to the position of Deputy Director of the
Institute of Museum and Library Services for Library Services. Ms. Chute
will begin working at the Institute on April 1, 2002.

In announcing the appointment, Robert S. Martin, Director of the Institute
said: "Ms. Chute has a record of achievement that will serve the
constituents of IMLS well. She has had extraordinary success in building
partnerships among all types of libraries and between libraries and other
community and government organizations. These partnerships have resulted in
outstanding public service. She has an excellent reputation for promoting
high quality library service and is a proven advocate for equity of access
to libraries. I look forward to her expertise in policy development and
know her leadership will build upon and expand the accomplishments of the
Institute."

Ms. Chute brings more than 20 years of professional library experience to
the Institute. She comes to the Institute from the Delaware Division of
Libraries/State Library, where she holds the position of Director and State
Librarian. As Director and State Librarian, Ms. Chute promotes the extension
and improvement of statewide library services through community outreach,
library automation, adopting new technologies, and resource sharing. Ms.
Chute oversees programming throughout the state's public libraries,
including DelAWARE: The Digital Library of the First State, and the Delaware
Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped. Ms. Chute serves as the
state's advocate for libraries with the legislature and the public.

Ms. Chute and the staff at the Delaware Division of Libraries are adapting
the Library Associate Training Institute from Maryland for Delaware's
libraries. In accord with Ms. Chute's vision of superb 'customer service' in
libraries, the program will focus on strengthening the communication skills
of all library staff. Ms. Chute and the Delaware Council on Libraries have
laid the groundwork for an ambitious statewide technology plan for
Delaware's libraries, the goal of which is to design a single patron
database and a single statewide catalog supported by the state library.
Under Ms. Chute's leadership a statewide reading program for all ages,
"Delaware Reads about the American Dream," is being initiated this summer as
a collaborative effort between Delaware's public libraries and the state
Department of Education.

Before Ms. Chute began working for the Delaware Division of Libraries, she
was the Public Library Consultant for the Maryland State Department of
Education, Division of Library Development. While working for Maryland her
responsibilities included marketing and public relations for Maryland
libraries, monitoring community based strategic planning initiatives, and
providing assistance to the county and regional systems and Sailor,
Maryland's award-winning online public information network.

Ms. Chute began her library career with the Massachusetts library system
where she worked for 16 years, 8 of which she spent serving as a public
library director. Ms. Chute has both a Master of Arts in art history from
Boston University and a Master of Library Science from Simmons College. She
earned a Bachelor of Arts in art history from the University of Michigan.

In assuming the position, Ms. Chute will become part of the senior
management team at the agency. She will assist in the development and
formulation of Institute policy with responsibility for the Office of
Library Services. This position was created by the Museum and Library
Services Act of 1996. The Act calls for the appointment of two Deputy
Directors of the Institute, one for the Office of Library Services and one
for the Office of Museum Services. Beverly Sheppard is the Deputy Director
of the Institute of Museum and Library Services for Museum Services.
