Scout Toolkit Released by Net Scout Services and the InterNIC

MADISON, Wisconsin, January 9, 1996 - The Info Scout project of the
InterNIC has announced a new name, a new Web site, and a new service --
The Scout Toolkit.

The InterNIC and Net Scout Services*, providers of the Scout Report and
Net-happenings, announce the release of the Scout Toolkit, a new service
designed to help new users identify the network tools most appropriate
for their needs. The Scout Toolkit was built by collecting, organizing,
and annotating a subset of the most effective network information tools
available. The Toolkit is made available for researchers, educators, and
others interested in using the Internet for access to quality resources.

The Toolkit is not meant to be a comprehensive listing of all network
tools, rather a select collection of tools organized by function.
Internet users can investigate searchable indexes, subject catalogs, and
annotated resource indexes and decide which tool best fits their needs.
Links to comprehensive listings of network tools are also provided for
further investigation.

Each service included in the Toolkit is previewed with a brief
description, allowing the user to determine its appropriateness before
linking to the site. In addition to information about search tools, a
Notable Browsers section provides information about widely used and
advanced Web clients. A Staying Current section offers a dozen effective
ways to stay informed of new Internet resources. The Specialized Tools
section takes a look at current and near future graphical, 3D, audio, and
video services.

If you find the Scout Toolkit useful for yourself and your users, let us
know at [log in to unmask] Based on feedback and input from the
community the Toolkit will be maintained and expanded as a permanent
service of Net Scout Services.

*The Info Scout project, a part of the InterNIC since 1993, has been
renamed Net Scout Services and relocated to the University of Wisconsin -
Madison. Scout Services produces a weekly newsletter, The Scout Report,
and a daily Internet announcement service, Net-happenings. Scout Services
has a staff of three: Susan Calcari, Info Scout, Jack Solock, Special
Librarian, and Gleason Sackman, moderator of Net-happenings from his
office in Fargo, North Dakota.

Net Scout Services has established a new Web site which links to the
Scout Report, Net-happenings, and the Scout Toolkit. Search capabilities
are provided for all three services.

Net Scout Services is one of 3 projects which together comprise the
InterNIC. The other InterNIC projects are Registration Services, managed
by Network Solutions, Inc. of Herndon, Virginia, and Directory and
Database Services managed by AT&T of South Plainfield, New Jersey. Visit
the newly designed Net Scout Services pages for more information.
