Dear Board Members and Friends of WWC,

GREAT NEWS!!!

Please find two letters following this ANNOUNCEMENT regarding the HACKENSACK
WATER COMPANY, New Milford Avenue, Oradell Borough, Bergen County, entered
onto the NEW JERSEY REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES on JUNE 21, 2001. The first
letter is to Maggie Harrer from Dorothy Guzzo, Administrator, Historic
Preservation Office of New Jersey. The second letter is to Pat Schuber from
Cari Wild, Assistant Commissioner, National & Historic Sites.

Congratulations to those who worked hard to make this happen!

Please call with any questions you may have.

Best,

Susan Koblin Schear
Corresponding Secretary
Water Works Conservancy, Inc.

 The letter from Dorothy reads:

Dear Ms. Harrer,

I am pleased to inform you that the Hackensack Water Company, New Milford
Avenue, Oradell Borough, Bergen County was entered onto the New Jersey
Register of Historic Places on June 21, 2001. In accordance with N.J.S.A.
13:1B-15.131, listing of an area, site,
structure or object on the New Jersey Register of Historic Places prevents
the State, a county, municipality or any of their agencies or
instrumentalities from undertaking any project that will encroach upon,
damage or destroy the property listed without approval from the Commissioner
of the Department of Environmental Protecton.

The application for the Hackensack Water Company was favorably received by
the State Review Board for Historic Sites and was subsequently signed onto
the New Jersey Register by the State Historic Preservation Officer. It will
now be sent to the National Park Service, US Department of the Interior,
Washington, DC to be considered for inclusion on the National Register of
Historic Places.

The Historic Preservation Office will inform you when we receive
notification from the National Register Office that the Hackensack Water
Company has been entered onto the National Register.

Congratulations.

Sincerely,
Dorothy Guzzo
Administrator

The letter sent to Pat Schuber reads:

Dear Mr. Schuber:

On March 26, 1997 the nomination application for the New Milford Plant of
the Hackensack Water Company was favorably recommended by the New Jersey
State Review Board of Historic Sites. In May, 1997, Jim Hall, former
Assistant Commissioner of Natural & Historic Sites
temporarily postponed consideration of the property for New Jersey and
National Register listing pending the County task force report.
On May 7, 2001 a request form the Water Works Conservancy was received by
the Historic Preservation Office (HPO) to reactivate the nomination
application for listing in the New Jersery and National Registers of
Historic Places.

After reviewing the nomination for the Hackensack Water Company and the
Task Force report submitted by the County, I have decided to list the
property in the New Jersey Register of Historic Places and will subsequently
forward to NPS for their consideration on the National
Register. The New Milford Plant of the Hackensack Water Company is a rare
example of early water treatment and distribution technology. It is apparent
that this property is an important site architecturally, in its contribution
to the suburban growth of the area and the technolological contributions of
this industrial plant. Moreover, the site has been designated by the Save
America's Treasure program and has received a matching grant from the New
Jersey Historic Trust.

Regarding my decision to include the Hackensack Water Company in the New
Jersey Register of Historic Places, I feel that the strong documentation of
the Hackensack Water Company nomination reflects the importance and
significance of this property. I understand our
concerns for the enormous stewardship responsibility required for
maintaining an industrial resource of this nature. The staff at the Historic
Preservation Office will be available to assist you as you formulate plans
to facilitate optional use and preservation of the complex.

If you have any questions, please contact Dorothy Guzzo of the Historic
Preservation Office at 609-984-0176.

Sincerely,
Cari Wild
Assistant Commissioner
