Hi David,

This from Rodale's Illustrated Encyclopedia of Herbs (a great reference
book!):

"In Teuton mythology flax was said to be under the protection of the goddess
Hulda, who taught mortals the art of growing, spinning, and weaving flax."

I bet an Internet search would yield something!
