The Morton Arboretum
Internship announcement
Interpretation & Exhibits

Development of Interpretive Materials for an Outdoor Setting

The Morton Arboretum is a 1700 acre outdoor museum of woody plants located in Lisle, Illinois. The mission of The Morton Arboretum is to collect and study trees, shrubs, and other plants from around the world, to display them across naturally beautifully landscapes for people to study and enjoy, and to learn how to grow them in ways that enhance our environment. Our goal is to encourage the planting and conservation of trees and other plants for a greener, healthier, and more beautiful world.

This internship provides a unique opportunity to explore informal learning opportunities in an outdoor setting. This internship will focus on one of the Arboretum's natural areas, the East Woods, and it's newest attraction, the Big Rock Visitor Station. The Big Rock Visitor Station serves as a trailhead to two interpreted trails, the Heritage Trail and the Woodland Trail. Together they explore topics of biodiversity and woodland ecology.

The internship will focus on developing supplemental, self-directed activities for children and families. The intern will produce an activity kit meant to be used by family groups during their visit to our site. The intern will learn to use a variety of evaluative techniques to test the effectiveness of the activity kit as well as direct production of the kits themselves.

The internship: Paid, full-time, 10 weeks, summer months (May/June to Aug/Sept). Beginning and ending dates are flexible and can be arranged around intern's academic schedule.

The intern will:
· Learn evaluation techniques and apply these techniques to the project
· Survey current visitors to assess needs for the project (conduct formative evaluation)
· Research similar activity kits
· Develop kit components
· Test kit effectiveness (conduct on-going evaluation using a variety of techniques)
· Assemble final kits and establish criteria for distributing kits
· Prepare a final evaluation report
· Attend informal meetings of Chicago area museum educators and/or exhibit developers
· Participate in other related tasks as assigned by the supervisor

Qualifications: The successful candidate will be a graduate student focusing on a career in museum education. Students currently enrolled in graduate level museum studies programs are encouraged to apply. A background in ecology, biology or natural science are helpful but not necessary. Skills learned in this project will be equally applicable in a wide variety of museum types. It is important that the candidate be enthusiastic about the natural world, have good computer, learning and people skills, and a desire to pursue a career centered on informal learning.

"Plant Trees"
           --J. Sterling Morton

Eat of them [the trees], but do not
cut them down, for is the tree of the
field a human who can run away
from your siege?
