Michael,

While hardly written as the history of exhibition design, one of my
favorite books on this topic is ART/artifact which was a catalog of a
touring exhibition of the same name by the Center for African Art in 1988.

The exhibition featured the installation of African Art in four distinct
settings: a 19th century "curiosity" room, an ethnography museum, an art
museum, and a "Soho" gallery.

Its purpose was to demonstrate how the presentation of objects affect our
understanding of them. I have used the catalog in numerous classes and I
highly recommend it.
