ASSISTANT DIRECTOR, UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND MUSEUMS.
The University of Richmond seeks an energetic assistant director and art
curator to be part of its new University Museums, which administratively
oversees the operation and seeks greater awareness of its art museum (Marsh
Art Gallery) and natural sciences museum (Lora Robins Gallery of Design
from Nature). As Assistant Director, this person will assist in the
over-all operation and programming of the University Museums; this person
will also serve as Assistant Curator of Marsh Art Gallery. The successful
candidate must have curatorial expertise in the area of the visual arts
along with an understanding and appreciation of the natural sciences,
decorative arts, and international cultural artifacts that comprise the
collections and missions of the two museums. As curator, the candidate must
have curatorial experience in the visual arts, a broad understanding of
contemporary and historical art, a knowledge of  museum standards and
practices, public presentation skills, and a record of scholarly
publications and exhibitions. Responsible for the development and care of
the collections, for interpretation through exhibitions, publications, and
participation in museum teaching and educational programs. Necessary skills
include connoisseurship, familiarity with conservation and collection care;
excellent research, writing, and speaking ability. Must enjoy collaborative
approach, working in a university environment, and must have strong
interpersonal and organizational ability. Duties include exhibition
planning and scheduling, developing and monitoring exhibition budgets,
coordination of loans and exhibitions, grantwriting, participating in
educational programs, and representing the museums and university to the
academic and art communities as well as the public. Prefer at least four
years museum experience in a curatorial or administrative role and a
master's degree (terminal degree preferred) in art history or studio art.
