Track 3 offers a three-week online digitization training course followed by
a workshop section. This course is for cultural heritage professionals who
are looking for more in-depth digitization instruction. It is a web-based,
asynchronous course that allows participants to contribute to on-line
discussions, complete written assignments, and solve real world
digitization problems. Topics include:

· Benefits and costs of digitization projects
· Issues involved with designing, setting goals, and evaluating
digitization projects
· Planning issues: budgeting, workflow, copyright, storage,
delivery, and preservation
· Metadata standards and metadata creation
· Selection of materials to be digitized
· Evaluation, selection, and purchasing digitization equipment
· Determining the best way to digitize collection and make it
accessible to the target audience
· Basic scanning and image manipulation

After completing the on-line segment, participants will come to the
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign for two days of hands-on
training with the University Library's Digital Imaging and Media Technology
Initiative (DIMTI). There will be opportunities to use scanners and digital
cameras, a large-format scanner, and other image capture equipment. This
course will allow participants to focus on their specific projects and
invites participants to bring items from their own collection to
digitize. Participants will see how the digitization process works from
start to finish.

THE FINAL TRACK 3 COURSE WILL BE HELD MARCH 28-APRIL 15, 2005 (THE 2-DAY
