Try the US Patent website: http://www.uspto.gov/

There is a way to look up patents by the date.  Since you don't have the
exact patent number you will have to look through all the patents for that
day until you find the one for your object, but it is definitely worth all
the info you will get when you find the right patent and you can print it
out to keep for your files.

We use this tool all the time to help us id things and get info on whole
they would have worked.
