Call for Papers
 
Mystic Seaport Museum and
The New England American Studies Association
has issued a Call for Papers:
 
"Race, Ethnicity and Power in Maritime America"
 
In cooperation with the New England American Studies Association, Mystic
Seaport Museum, the nation's leading maritime museum, is inviting paper and
panel proposals for a National Conference on ethnic studies in maritime
America.
 
To be held at Mystic Seaport Museum, Mystic, CT Sept. 14-17, 1995, this
national conference will be a multi-disciplinary discussion of race and
ethnicity as related to the maritime communities and enterprise of North
America and the Caribbean.  It will draw together scholars and researchers
engaged in maritime studies and related fields such as American history and
literature, urban studies, Native American studies, African American Studies,
Latin American studies, women's studies, diplomatic history, sociology, art
history, labor history, archaeology, anthropology, and others.  Conference
proceedings will be published in monograph form by Mystic Seaport Museum and
the New England American Studies Association.
 
The submission of proposals for panel sessions which emphasize prior
communication and collaboration among panelists is strongly encouraged.  We
welcome proposals from graduate and postgraduate scholars, museum
professionals and independent researchers.
 
Please mail or fax a 250-word abstract of the proposed paper or panel and
c.v.(s) *BEFORE FEBRUARY 15, 1995* to DR. JAMES MILLER, Director, American

Conference planning committee consists of Dr. Miller and Assoc. Prof. Susan
Pennybacker of Trinity, Revell Carr and Glenn Gordinier of Mystic Seaport
Museum, Earl Mulderink of the University of Wisconsin and Jim Horton, Prof.
of History at George Washington University.
