Also might want to contact the staff at the Newport Restoration Foundation, who just did an exhibit on the history of historic preservation in Newport.

I know the Ringling Museum of Art has done numerous presentations on many aspects of historic preservation. You could contact Michelle Scalara-Chief Conservator for information.
