Hi Gail,
Can I go with you? :)  When we went to Edinburgh, we stayed on the top 
floor of an old merchant's house right on the Royal Mile called 
Gladstone's land.  It is a small apartment- fully equipped and very 
reasonable.  The only downside is that it is a fourth floor walkup- so you 
end up planning your excursions carefully.  The property is run by the 
National Trust of Scotland.  Here is a link:
