Hmmmm...

Aside from contacting the manufacturer, all I can think of is clock oil,
which if no bacteria becomes involved making the oil "tacky", the oil will
just evaporate. Scary thought of oil near Hollinger boxes, but clock oil
might be something to consider. It is effective in very small amounts - half
a drop might just do the trick? More control I should think than WD40!

Good luck.

Best,
Ware

Subject: [MUSEUM-L] Lubricant for mobile storage systems

Hi,
Our mobile shelving system in our archives storage room was installed
decades ago - possibly 1970s. It dawned on me today that it probably
hasn't been lubricated in years...as I vacuumed up what looked like
metal filings from the rails. I don't know the manufacturer but this
seems like a generic question: what do people use? It's a fully manual
system, no gears at all, so I just need to grease the rails. I'm
thinking a good axle lubricant from the car parts store.
Any tips are appreciated!
