Hello Ellen,

As someone who lived in London for most of the '90s, I agree with the many
excellent suggestions made by those on the list. My only addition would be
to suggest Cambridge instead of Oxford, as a day trip, if you were wanting
to do one of the two. Oxford sadly lost much of its center to shopping malls
in the 1960s. Cambridge did not, and has the punting on the river, and more
of the 'dreaming spires' feel, in my opinion.

While in London, be sure to pick up a copy of the excellent 'Time Out'
magazine- it is weekly and in all newsagents. It lists all the things going
on in the city- including all the museums and art galleries, from big to
small. It does the same for good restaurants. It has a somewhat irreverant
tone and looks out for bargains, I think it would suit your purposes
entirely in your hunt for good, small, out-of-the-way attractions.

If time permits, be sure to just wander around some of the different parts
of London and take in just how different it can be from mile to mile. Camden
market on a weekend is very student-y and bohemian, worlds away from the
gritty-working-class Brick Lane market in the east end. Soho is a wonderful
square mile of restaurants, bars, and international food shops, next to one
of the world's biggest Chinatowns. London never stops and is always
changing, making it a great place for repeat visits. Have fun!
