hi MacKenzie,
I'm responding to your email because I'm desperately trying to put together an outreach program (as a part-time staffer it's difficult) and our museum is TINY (1 1/2 staff, hardly any visitors) I have no idea how a pilot program would benefit us cause basically I"m making this up as I go, but I"ll try to answer as many of your ponder-material questions as i can.

What resources do small museums need to enhance their outreach programs?
we need money for lightweight framing so our works can be moved easily to schools, libraries, community centers for exhibitions. We need money for supplies for our art-making workshops. We borrow the books we want to use from the library, btu it'd be great to have our own copies to bring with (my program combines visual art with literacy learning) It be great to be paid for my time and mileage as well.

Are small museums interested in learning how to implement outreach
programs?
absolutely! how to form partnerships with schools etc, how to fundraise for them, how to approach businesses in the community, how to evaulat our programs--i need it all! As I said, I make good contacts and pique much interest, but in the end, no one takes much action!

Are small museums interested in renting or purchasing exhibits that
they could use in an existing outreach program?
no, we're interested in creating our own with the art from our gallery.

Do small museums need access to exhibits that they can easily set up
on-site for temporary programs?
I"m not sure what this means.

What would a small museum hope to gain through piloting an outreach
program?
reachign a bigger audience and bringing them into the gallery, learning how to create evaluations to support the success of our program, learnign how to build and sustain partnerships (venues, audiences, financial partners, etc.) putting together a comprehensive plan w/which to create more programs (step by step how-to guide) building a track record for obtaining grants and attracting hosts/participants.

(* As a reference, our small museum serves roughly 45,000 people
annually, our budget is approximately $500,000, and we have about 12
FTE staff members.)
(our budget is about 80k and we're 1.5 people with some high school student interns from time to time)
