Here's what has worked for me:

    (a)  a party rental supply store usually sells old equipement;  I bought
really
          good stantions and rehabed them.   They were very inexpensive --
about
          $10 each.  But be warned, they are very, very heavy, and stopping at
          an intersection, a stantion tipped gently into my windshield and
cracked it!
          Oh, the joys of running small museums.

     (b)  since you are using a  table,  you can have a plexi glass
craftsperson make
           a large cube that will fit on the top of the table (you can screw
it from under-
            neath so  that it is secure and stable).   We used old, wooden
library tables        at the school museum I used to manage, and had our
designer make such cubes.
           This was an inexpensive and secure way of making display cases.
