Conner Prairie Living History Museum is pleased to announce the Randall L. Tobias Foundation Rural History Fellowships. The two fellowships available in 2001 are designed to provide graduate and post graduate students with a unique six-month educational experience at Conner Prairie, one of America's premiere living history museums. During the course of this non-degree fellowship, the two fellows will assist with program development associated with the new historic area at Conner Prairie, Liberty Corner, an 1886 Rural Crossroads and Farm. Liberty Corner consists of the Liberty Corner Quaker Meeting House, Liberty Corner School (District #2), the Cedar Chapel covered bridge, and the 1886 Zimmerman Farm.

The two fellowships allow each student to gain valuable experience in such fields as historical administration, rural studies, and historic preservation. In addition, each fellow will also have the opportunity to study in two specific areas. One of the fellowships will focus on agriculture and horticulture, while the second will focus on historic livestock breeds. The agricultural and horticultural Tobias Fellow will work with museum staff to preserve 19th century plant varieties commonly found on Indiana farms during this period. The historic livestock breed Tobias Fellow will work with Conner Prairie staff to raise endangered breeds of historically significant livestock. The produce and breeds raised will be used for new educational programs at Liberty Corner, which the Tobias Fellows will also help develop. Under the supervision of Conner Prairie staff, the Tobias Fellows will also conduct research; plan, develop, and implement programs at the 1886 farm, as well as participate in Immersion History Live-In Programs currently under development.

Through a generous grant from the R.L. Tobias Foundation, Conner Prairie is also able to offer a stipend of $7,000/six months for each fellow. On-site housing is also available at no cost.
