For what its worth, the damage described in the original post was
mitigated during a thorough conservation campaign.  Last year,
however, some philistine members of the football squad again
vandalized the sculpture, but again treatment has been generally
successful in minimizing the physical damage.  However, this does
beg the question of what precisely is meant by a "liberal"
education.
