If you haven't already seen this, you might want to check out CHIN's
(Canadian Heritage Information Network) software that they reviewed at:
http://www.chin.gc.ca/Resources/Collect_Mgnt/Upgrades/e_upgrades.html. They
provide links to many of the vendors. I think their review is several years
old (someone will correct me if they've kept it updated, I hope), but the
links seem to be good.

As for home-grown systems: beware! These have a tendency to morph into
twisted "spaghetti" and if the person who develops it for you takes off or
(the proverbial) gets hit by a truck, you may be stranded without being able
to use your system.

As a former software developer, I strongly suggest that you pay close
attention to who is behind the software. Functionality is important, of
course. The software must do what you need it to do. But in the end, if it
breaks down, all you have are the people who designed and built it. Make
sure that you trust them to be there for you. If they're non-responsive
during the sales period, you can guess how they'll be after you buy!
