I really appreciate all the information that is coming in from everyone.
This is becoming quite an education for me as I started out not knowing 
a darn
thing about shells.
These shell have been stored in cardboard boxes for about 10 years. Last 
year we began
bringing them out to do research for an exhibit. (Which opens Monday) 
About a week ago
we began to notice a few of the shell having "Pin Holes" on them. As we 
looked closer at
the collection we found more shells with the same holes. I'm sure some 
have had them for quite
some time. We have found a couple of exoskeletons of dead insects on the 
shells with damage
but we're not sure if that's the culprit or if they just got boxed in 
with the shells. So far we haven't come
across the powdery coating mentioned with Bynes Disease or what appears 
to be an active
infestation of insects. But we haven't opened all the boxes yet. There 
are dozens of boxes
with hundreds of shells.
Again, I 'm thankful for the information all of you have given me. If 
you can think of anything
else please let me know. It's a beautiful collection and I would hate to 
see something
happen to it.
