The Mask of King Tutanhkamun during the 1974 tour in the US of King Tut's
treasures.  My parents and I were back in the States for only a few weeks
(living in Africa at the time). The line around the National Gallery
wrapped the building 5 times.  My mom stood in line for tickets and missed
them by two people.  So she asked the guard at the door if she could get a
wheelchair for her daughter as we had just come from Africa.  She came and
got me out of ring 4 and said "Look pale, we're going in."  (I was so
scared the guards were going to know I wasn't really sick that it was easy
for me to look pale the whole time!) I got to see the whole exhibit from
the comfort of a wheelchair but had to stand when we saw the Mask--I'd seen
a hundred pictures of it before, but nothing prepared me for the beauty and
wonder of seeing it in person.
Incidentally, my mom made me push her around the rest of the National
Gallery that day.
