I am currently searching for information regarding the fifth U.S.
Infantry, stationed in the northwest corner of the (modern) state of
Montana in 1887. These men were stationed in the area to deal with
unrest among the area's local Native population. The leader of the 5th
was Lieutenant Kennedy.

The reason I am searching for infromation regarding the 5th infantry, is
to find out more about their relations and communication with the North
West Mounted Police of Canada. Superintendent Sam Steele (commander of
NWMP forces in the Kootenay area of British Columbia), in his report for
1887, states that he knew Kennedy well and was in constant communication
with him. We believe that such an occurence can offer good opportunity
to elaborate on transborder relations away from the centres of
power-i.e. Washington and Ottawa.

Being from Canada, I must admit that I have not had much experience in
researching in the United States and so do not really know where to
start in this matter. If anyone could give some suggestion it would be
most appreciated.

Thanks,
