Illinois State Museum, Springfield, Illinois
Technology Learning Center Educator

The Illinois State Museum Society seeks a qualified individual to develop
educational programming for the new Technology Learning Center at the
Illinois State Museum’s Research and Collections Center in Springfield,
Illinois. The Educator is responsible for developing and presenting
content-focused, technology-based lessons and programs using the
collections and research of the Illinois State Museum. He or she will
work closely with Museum researchers and educators to interpret the
natural and cultural history of Illinois; produce lesson plans and
materials for use in the Technology Learning Center and distribution to
Illinois classrooms; collaborate with the Technology Learning Center
Coordinator in the production of grant proposals; and participate in
professional organizations and activities for Illinois educators.

The successful applicant will have prior experience in teaching with
computer technology. A bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline (e.g.,
education, instructional technology) is required; current teaching
certification or master’s degree is preferred. This position requires
well-developed communication, planning, and problem-solving skills; and
the ability to learn and apply computer technologies rapidly. An
interest in and knowledge of natural history, cultural history, art, and
museum practices is preferred.

The Technology Learning Center is a model program for linking the vast
resources of the Illinois State Museum to schools, teachers, and
students. The Center provides access to high-tech equipment for
scientific visualization and modeling unavailable in most schools;
opportunities for student and teacher research and training; and access
to the Museum’s collections, research data, and expertise. Participants
in Center programs are able to examine and analyze a wide array of
objects from the Museum’s extensive collections; develop models,
simulations, and three-dimensional recreations based on real data and
associated research; generate hard copies of large-scale maps, posters,
or other materials they develop; and save their data and products onto
videotape or DRUM for use in their own classrooms.

Equipment available in the Center includes: a permanent installation of
microcomputers (Mac OS, Windows, and Linux) with high-bandwidth Internet
connections; several high-end graphics workstations; desktop- and
WAN-based video conferencing systems; two- and three-dimensional
scanning and imaging equipment; and projection, plotting, and printing
equipment. Software packages used in the Center include: 3DNature World
Construction Set, Adobe Photoshop, Alias|Wavefront Maya, Apple QTVR
Authoring Studio, Eos Systems Photomodeler, ESRI ArcView GIS, Macromedia
Director, and NaN Blender.

Educational programs will cover topics such as effective use of
technology and the Internet in the classroom; engaged learning;
integration and use of Museum-authored and other Web materials with art,
social science, and science curricula; Internet browsing and research;
Web content design and development; three-dimensional imaging and
modeling; Geographic Information Systems mapping; and content-based
programs in the arts, anthropology, and the natural sciences. Content
for teacher and student training programs will be correlated with
Illinois state goals, standards, and benchmarks for learning and will
supplement K-12 classroom curricula.

This is a full-time position with the Illinois State Museum Society,
reporting to the Technology Learning Center Coordinator. The Illinois
State Museum Society is an EOE/AA Employer. This position provides
full benefits; salary is negotiable and commensurate with experience.
This position is available now. For maximum consideration, submit
application materials by November 30, 2000. Applications will be
