By the 1880's women did (on occasion) wear split skirts or breeches for
riding sidesaddle. For more info I recommend contacting the World Sidesaddle
Federation (www.sidesaddle.org). They have an extensive lending library, and
know many experts on the topic of authentic riding apparel for women.
