I am so glad to see this topic discussed. Do not forget that if you
contract for an exhibit, make sure that your contract with the
designer/fabricator states who exactly has the copyright. I've seen so
many exhibits pop up in other museums that are almost identical to
others. There is nothing the museum can do if the exhibit designer or
fabricator holds or makes a copyright on someone's else's designs.

Ms. Beach,

Since exhibits often use copyrighted material and can themselves be
copyrighted, you might want to specify which institution will hold the
rights to the exhibit (or will it be joint?) and who will hold licenses
for material used from other sources. You might also want to specify who

will be doing any necessary rights work, as it can be time consuming and

expensive.

Good luck!
