I am not supporting any one company over another but I did find
information on the Alltel web site about their line progress and
donations of phones and minutes. Many companies may be doing similar
programs so if there is one you prefer call their customer service
number and ask for info. I called the Alltel customer service number
and local stores are accepting donations of used cell phones for Katrina
relief. Check your phone book or Alltel.com for local store locations.
Normally Alltel donates them to women's shelters but at this time they
are directing them toward the Katrina relief effort. Now if there were
only a way to direct them to museums...

Reaching out to help - Updated Sept. 6

Alltel Hurricane Recovery Teams working to restore Alltel's wireless
network made major progress Tuesday and over the Labor Day weekend. The
wireless network has been restored in Jackson, Miss., and Baton Rouge,
La., with significant network improvement reported in and around
Hattiesburg, Miss.

Despite the progress, customers in these areas will continue to
encounter delays in placing or receiving calls due to extremely high
call volumes.

Alltel also has provided financial assistance to customers and has made
cash donations to the American Red Cross for hurricane relief efforts in
Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.

The company is providing free nationwide roaming, long-distance and text
messaging over the next two months to customers in the New Orleans,
Biloxi and Gulfport, Miss., areas. Customers also will not incur any
overage charges during that time period. Alltel is providing 250 anytime
minutes to prepaid customers in these areas. Prepaid customers also will
receive free text messaging and no overage charges over the next month.
Alltel will continue to evaluate providing additional assistance to
customers.

In addition, hurricane evacuees and their loved ones can make free phone
calls from Alltel stores to anywhere in the country during normal
business hours. Customers also can recharge wireless phone batteries and
receive assistance with damaged handsets and accessories.

For evacuees at the Houston Astrodome, Alltel sent 60,000 minutes worth
of free long-distance calling cards.
