The international headlines (FOR THE FULL STORY VISIT THE WEBZINE at this
address http://www.globalmuseum.org and click on the news links) in this
week's edition include:

** China's Reluctant Emperor
For nearly three decades of his 48-year reign (1572-1620), Wan Li refused to
read petitions and memorandums sent to him, replace officials who retired or
died or even attend his own morning audiences

** Where Every Second Counts
Why is this museum - the largest such institution in the country, with an
entrance evoking the Acropolis, and 12,000 clocks, watches, timepieces and
timekeepers displayed in 18,000 square feet - in a small town not far from
Lancaster, Pa., in the midst of Pennsylvania Dutch farm country?

** Seeing was believing
The sense of oddness is often compounded by the naive style of early amateur
artists and even sometimes by unforeseen semantic shifts; thus an emu is
labelled on an anonymous print of 1792, "A non descript Bird found at Botany
Bay", where the author means to say that it has not been previously
described, adding that the print is "from a drawing made on the spot", the
first of many such assurances, designed to forestall the reader's
incredulity
