The Springfield Art Museum invites applications for the position of Assistant Director.  Located in Missouri’s third largest city, the Springfield Art Museum serves as a cultural hub to the region.  The Springfield MSA has a population of over 300,000 and features numerous amenities found in a larger city but with a small-town feel.  Springfield boasts a vibrant downtown, award winning parks, numerous restaurants and entertainment options, and an active and supportive arts community.  The Springfield Art Museum includes a +50,000 sq ft. facility on a +6 acre park-like setting and features a 392-seat auditorium and an outdoor amphitheatre.  The Springfield Art Museum houses an encyclopedic collection of over 9,000 objects including American, European, and Asian art as well as significant holdings of works on paper and decorative arts.

Key duties will include:

-       Management of the Museum’s administrative staff including completing performance evaluations, participating in and making recommendations regarding hiring decisions, recommending and implementing necessary disciplinary action and provides appropriate training and development for employees,

-       Grant writing and reporting,

-       Planning and implementing departmental budgets,

-       Assisting in the development and implementation of Museum policy,

-       Assisting in the development and implementation of fundraising and development plans and marketing campaigns,

-       Assisting with facility management including major building projects,

-       Overseeing facility use including rentals of the Museum’s auditorium and amphitheatre as well as special events,

-       The Assistant Director will serve as acting Director in the Director's absence.


REQUIRES:  BA in Art History, Museum Studies, Arts Administration, Studio Art, or related degree, plus at least three years of progressively responsible experience in an art museum, art center or other art-related organization and at least two years in a supervisory capacity required.  MA or MFA preferred.  Flexible schedule to attend evening and weekend meeting and events.
