Position available: MEMBERSHIP MANAGER

Application deadline: February 5, 2001

This is an exciting opportunity to hone many skills in the areas of
membership management and development. The California Historical Society is
flourishing at its central location in the Yerba Buena neighborhood of
downtown San Francisco. Its exhibitions, programs, and store are attracting
increasing attendance, and membership has grown steadily since CHS opened
its headquarters at 678 Mission Street in 1995.

Responsibilities
The Membership Manager's primary responsibility is to manage the membership
program of CHS. This entails maintaining the membership database
(Paradigm), handling membership billings and fulfillment, tracking all dues
and gifts, and providing reports. Work on fund-raising events (helping
volunteer committees, managing event records), and assistance with other
development needs, including grant proposal writing and direct mail appeals,
are part of the scope of the job. This is a full-time non-exempt position
with full benefits reporting directly to and supervised by the CHS
Development Director.

Qualifications
The position requires someone who is able to work both independently and as
part of a team and maintain numerous projects simultaneously. Applicants
should have a BA with a minimum of 3 years development or marketing
experience. Ability to be patient and maintain a pleasant manner, both in
person and on the telephone, is necessary due to substantial interaction
with members and the public. Strong computer skills (Windows) required, and
familiarity with fundraising database or similar software is desirable
(Access a plus). Excellent writing and verbal communication skills and
attention to detail are essential.

Compensation
Salary up to $32K plus excellent benefits (full health and dental plans).

How to apply
Send letter, resume and writing samples by February 5th to:
CHS/Development, 678 Mission St., SF, CA 94105-4014; fax: (415) 357-1850;
