HISTORIAN II
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Historian II position involves professional historical investigations
under the supervision of the Director of Cultural Resources for the
Environmental Resources Management Branch, Facilities and Engineering
Directorate, Texas Army National Guard.  As part of an interdisciplinary
team, the employee will prepare National Register nominations and eligibility
determinations, planning documents, research reports, and correspondence.
The employee will conduct archival investigations, collect oral histories
and conduct other research  Travel may be required 25% to 75% of the time.
Employment is for a one-year period, renewable.
 
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED
* Documents and recommends buildings and other structures for the National
 Register eligibility
* Prepares National Register nominations
* Conducts historic surveys, collects oral histories, and collects and
 organizes archival and deed
 information
* Prepares research reports, scopes of work
* Advises staff regarding the Section 106 process and State historic
 preservation regulations
* Prepares interagency correspondence
* Remains current on State and Federal regulations related to Historic
 Preservation
* Performs other duties as needed to comply with State and Federal regulations
* Prepares illustrations, photographs, and maps for reports and publications
* Works closely with the Staff Archeologists and Archeological Assistant(s)
* Conducts training in historic preservation for military and civilian
 personnel
* Other duties as assigned
 
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

30 Conducts historical research and data collection, including archival
research, deed
searches, oral history interviews and photo documentation.
 
20 Prepares documentation for National Register nominations and
   Determinations of Eligibility on historic buildings, structures,
   sites, landscapes, etc.
 
20 Prepares research reports
 
10 Advises staff on Section 106 and Section 110, and Federal, State,
   and Army regulations; Keeps abreast of current laws and regulations.
 
10 Assists with archeological investigations, especially on historic
   archeological sites
 
10 Other duties as assigned
 
GENERAL QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Experience and Training
*  At least two years of progressive experience in historic preservation,
  including National Register nominations and eligibility evaluations.
  Preference for those with experience in research, oral history interviews,
  and report writing
*  Knowledge of standard methods of historical research and data
  interpretation
*  Familiar with the Section 106 process and Section 110 of the National
  Historic Preservation Act
*  Excellent writing and communication skills.

Education
Bachelor's degree from an accredited university in History, Historic
Architecture, Art
History, or a related discipline with specialty in historic preservation.
Graduate degree in
History, Historic Architecture, Art History, or a related discipline
preferred.
 
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
* Working knowledge of issues in Architectural History, Texas History,
Military History
* Skilled at record keeping, archival research, deed search, oral history
* Preference for individuals with special skills in photography,
illustrating, measured
drawings, drafting and cartography, statistics, or experience with
historic archeology.
* Working knowledge of the sources, methods, and techniques used in
historical research
* Ability to perform  historical research and correlate source material
* Good verbal and written communication skills
