Ross Weeks makes a good point about salaries.

Another way to look at this is to consider the advantages of
transferring the tasks museum staff say they do that do not require
their museum training or expertise. Suppose 1/3 of the professional
staff’s time is spent on such duties, and suppose they could hire that
work done by someone else at 75% of their salaries. A museum could take
three professional positions and convert them to two professional and
one unskilled (in terms of museum skills) positions. The salary savings
would allow 12.5% raises to the two professionals with the added bonus
of their energy being concentrated in their areas of skill, interest,
and expertise.
