Dear Catherine:  Carpeting should not be used in storage, as it both
attracts and hides insects.  I prefer to recommend a thin layer of ethafoam
to line metal shelves.  It is inert, acid-free, and easy to use, and will
cause no harm or abrasiveness to the sculptures.  Cheers!
