You should contact the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. They have been,
and are still, photographing every item in their 60,000 item collection, and
have put much of it on their web site (www.famsf.org). If you haven't
already seen their site, you should check it out, it's quite something.

Although you are doing this for a database, and not necessarily a web site,
you should definitely talk to FAMSF. The person at FAMSF who coordinated the
project is Dakin Hart, and he can be reached at (415) 750-3600, or
[log in to unmask] The company that helped them with the project is Media
Trope -- contact Tania Schwartz at (415) 896-2000 or [log in to unmask]
 Their site is www.mediatrope.com.

I myself am in the process of researching the development of web sites, and
will put out a survey on this list-serv.

Good luck!
