Mackinac State Historic Parks

EXHIBIT DESIGNER
This position is responsible for the design, fabrication, installation, and
maintenance of all Mackinac State Historic Parks exhibits and displays.
This position works independently on a wide range of exhibit projects,
which share the historical and nature themes of MSHP with the public. The
position is based in Mackinaw City, Michigan and requires frequent ferry
transportation to and from Mackinac Island.  Position may work with power
tools, equipment and chemical solutions that require safety procedures and
awareness.  This position may require attendance at training sessions as
directed.  The Exhibit Designer reports directly to the Chief Curator.

Requirements:
This position may be filled at the entry, intermediate or experienced
level.  Level of hire and salary will be commensurate with the applicants’
skill, experience and educational levels.

Education and Experience:

Entry Level:
Prefer minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts, Design, Museum Studies
or related field. Minimum of one year of experience as a museum exhibit
designer/preparator.

Intermediate Level:
Prefer Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts, Design, Museum Studies or related
field and additional professional training specific to museum exhibitions.
Minimum of three years of experience as a museum exhibit
designer/preparator.

Experienced Level:
Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts, Design, Museum Studies or related field
required.  Additional professional training to specific museum exhibitions
required.  Minimum of five years of experience as a museum exhibit
designer/preparator.

Substitution:  Three full years of demonstrated experience as a museum
exhibits designer may be substituted for the Bachelor degree requirement.
 In addition to the specific experience listed above, applicants must
possess some experience in the following:

&#61608; Design of a wide variety of museum exhibits and displays
&#61608; Use of current museum display products and materials
&#61608; Use of current museum display technologies and fabrication processes
&#61608; Contracting and overseeing private vendors
&#61608; Knowledge of use of evaluation and testing in exhibit design
&#61608; Demonstrated ability to meet established goals and deadlines

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
&#61608; Creative concepting and design skills
&#61608; Mechanical drawing skills and/or CAD skills
&#61608; Effective verbal and written communication skills
&#61608; Strong interpersonal relationship skills
&#61608; Ability to work with a wide variety of hand and power tools and
fabrication processes
&#61608; Flexible and adaptable work habits
&#61608; Ability to operate computer systems (word processing and e-mail)
&#61608; Ability and willingness to travel to all MSHP locations on a daily basis
&#61608; Ability to monitor and maintain exhibits and displays

Compensation:
Position may be filled at various levels depending on experience and
education. Level of hire and salary will be commensurate with the
applicants’ skill, experience and educational levels.  The salary range for
this position is $28,950 to $42,100 ($13.92/hr to $20.24/hr) DOE.
