RFP Planning & Exhibition Consultant
The Fairfield Historical Society seeks to hire a consultant who would provide guidance, advice, and
assistance to the FHS Staff in undertaking the first stages of planning exhibition and public spaces
in the Society’s new Museum and History Center. This person will be an experienced museum
professional who is conversant with architectural plans, and has strong experience working with
history museums. Must be available to begin work in October 2005.

Experience/Skills Required:

Experience with interior museum space planning in a variety of spaces, materials specifications,
and fixture design

Flexibility to work within budgetary constraints

Knowledge of current design standards and materials

Experience with Interpretive/Master Plan development in a history museum

Excellent communication skills, with the ability to facilitate the design process between museum
staff and architects

Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail

The consultant will work with the staff to conceptualize and develop a comprehensive interpretive
philosophy, leading to a cohesive plan for both formal exhibit spaces and public areas of the
building. He/she will devise innovative and realistic strategies for achieving interpretive goals
appropriate to the areas. The consultant will also evaluate architectural plans with an eye to
ensuring the greatest possible flexibility and best use of the dedicated gallery spaces, and help
determine ways in which collections items can be safely integrated in non-gallery areas of the
building. The consultant will work with the staff to create cost-effective design solutions based
on professional design criteria and conservation requirements.
