Angelique,

Yes, essentially they would have to ask, assuming you did not arrange your
vita as Loretta does. Most will ask in an interview, as it can be important
to their perception of your qualifications. I have only done one paid
internship, which was part of my masters degree, so it was easy to put on
my resume. Some people accumulate numerous internships for different
reasons, and might need a means of distinguishing them from one another.
Many do not even note unpaid internships.

Unpaid internships are certainly not useless, and can be quite valuable to
you and to an employer. However, under most circumstances, the assumption
is made that paid internships involve more reponsibility and a generally
higher level of professional training or interaction. Unpaid internships
are often viewed as a form of volunteership. No insult to the essential
nature of volunteership intended.

If you only have one or two, I would not necessarily go to the effort to
distinguish them as paid or unpaid. It is more important to accurately
reflect what you did and learned as part of the experience, than whether or
not it was paid.

Hello, Mark, et al,

While not disputing your claim that paid internships are valued more
highly by employers (I certainly know they are by interns!), I was curious
how a prospective employer would know if an internship was paid or unpaid.
My current resume doesn't reflect this...or would an interviewing employer
simply ask?

Thank you for your guidance in this,

Angélique Weger
