I was just at Mound City and it predates Cahokia by about 500 years. The
Hopewell Indians built Mound City but had abandoned it by about 400 AD while
the Mississippian Indians built Cahokia and reached their peak around 1100 AD
and abandoned by 1200 AD. The two sites have similar mounds and are worth
visiting if you happen to be in the area.

On the subject of mounds, effigy mounds are in the shape of either animals or
people as opposed to regular burial mounds which are simple geometric shapes
right?
