Indigo,

when, say, the NY Times or LA Times (I've never worked with the Tribune)
uses something of mine, they pay me for certain limited uses (including,
sometimes, web use) of what is my Intellectual Property. That work of mine
is protected by the various Copyright Acts, with certain exceptions.

When someone takes that work and uses it outside those exceptions, it's not
censorship, or a restriction of Free Speech, it's Theft. Plain and simple.
The same as stealing the photocopier paper from work, or shoplifting dresses
in LA.
