Here (in Britain) internships are common. Many of the MA Museum
Studies courses and similar include time working in museums, and for
some, time working in museums before the course starts is essential.
But it is all voluntary work. Some museums do pay travelling expenses
to volunteers, and let them use subsidised facilities, but
nothing approaching wages (travelling expenses being a few pounds for
bus fares, not trans-atlantic flights, I'm afraid).

When I was looking for first-time posts, there were a handful of
museums which offered entry-level posts which were designated as
'training posts'. This was a while back, and I don't recall
seeing any advertised in the last couple of years.

Let me know by email if you are in a financial position where
you could work for nothing, and we'll talk further ...
