Dear Terry,  I would suggest that you put a "Call for Proposals" notice
in several of the national art magazines in order to generate the best
respnse from artists.  There's Art Calendar at P.O. box 199, Upper

There may be some really good artists out there doing work which fits
your "What is a City" theme that curators don't know about.  I know
there are lots of artist doing public art things that would fit this
theme--some redesigning cities as well as artists responding to city
problems and defining communities.  Did you see my article in the
September issue of Sculpture magazine about artist-organized exhibitions
of outdoor sculpture?  This article mentioned the artists in this area
who have been doing installations in vacant downtown storefront
windows.  One group of installations done by Marion Wilson and some
other artists in Syracuse was called "Big, Important Town", the
dictionary definition for "city".  Some of my interests and work would
also fit the "What is a city" theme.  I am working on a series of map
pieces which use city maps as the basis for the imagery.  I plan to make
a "map room" installation piece.  The piece would examine the physical
and mental/emotional layout of cities.  Please keep me posted as your
