Echoing Curtis, I also started as a volunteer at a Civil War battlefield museum while a freshman in college. That led to a seasonal position two years later and then the museum registrar position shortly after graduation. I've been there 16 years now.

In response to Jen’s comments about getting jobs through volunteering, we just can’t overstate the value of volunteering. I volunteered in a conservation lab at a university museum for three years as an undergrad, and that contact helped me land an assistantship that paid for my grad school. I tried to volunteer at a local museum to do special projects to help finish up my master’s degree, but ended up getting hired instead—I’m still there nearly 16 years later! You just never know what doors will open when you introduce yourself and your skills to people in the museum world.

I think Marc was just pointing it out in case she didn't know. It seemed like she was just thanking people and acknowledging that she had seen their welcome message, which is something that could be done privately. If it was answering someone's question or contributing to a discussion, then of course we all benefit if it's posted to the list-serv.

Welcome to the list-serv and I double agree about volunteering somewhere (if you can balance it with working/school/job searching). I've gotten jobs at museums that way, and as the volunteer coordinator at a museum now, have seen people get jobs that started as volunteers.

Angela,

You do realize that all 4,000+ of us read your posts? You may wish to take your individual responses private rather than on the list. And welcome!
