Good afternoon, all;

We're in the midst of designing a new permanent gallery, and are having
to consider the construction details of new cases. The plan calls for a
number of large cases (ranging from 4' x 6' to about 6' x 7', and about
2' thick), 10 mm (about 3/8 inch) tempered glass on all four sides, with
double door front panels for access. The gallery layout requires that
access to the cases be from the front, with murals that will run behind
the cases and be visible through the all-glass case.

We're in a bit of a quandary here, as the planned cases would have a
detracting seam in the glass where the doors meet. One option is to go
with a single removable panel instead of the two hinged doors, but we're
rather alarmed at the potential consequences of having to move a chunk
of glass of that size to access the cases (IE., number of people
required to move it, availability of a safe place to set it down once
removed from the case, the potential for chipping the lower edge on the
painted concrete floor, etc.). I looked at some of the access
mechanisms Hahn has for their cases (viewable at
http://www.glasbau-hahn.de/english/vitrinen/oeffnungsmechanismen/oeffnungsmechanismen_en.php);
has anyone tried using Hahn's mechanisms in a custom-built case? Are
the mechanisms themselves even available? What other solutions have
people come up with to access a large case without creating a seam?

Feel free to contact me off-list.

Thanks for your input!
