the only thing I can think of is that the use of the mushroom
(presumably Amanita muscaria) is a reference to its halucinogenic
qualities.  It was used in rituals in Siberia and other areas.  Along
with the halucinogenic effects there are the nauseous and stomach cramp
effects.  Though generally not deadly, this species has caused deaths
in some people.  It is sometimes suggested that the toxicity varies in
different places.  I cannot see why halucinating would be viewed as
"lucky" and I'm not interested in trying it so maybe I'll go along with
Karen Kroslowitz' suggestion of some "devlish" scheme being afoot.
