Hi,
Please share this with other list serves, museum studies alumni offices,
or any folks you know seeking an entry-level (albeit one year) position.
Feel free to contact me off-line with any questions. Thanks!
John Marks

The Geneva (NY) Historical Society is hiring a collections assistant to
inventory its collection in 2005. Funded by an IMLS Museums for America
grant, the assistant will enter detailed artifact information into an
existing Filemaker Pro database of 6,500 records. The qualified
applicant will have completed coursework for a master's degree in museum
studies, public history, or similar discipline, or have several years of
equivalent collections management experience. Necessary experience
includes: handling and describing artifacts; inventory procedures; using
Chenhall's Revised Nomenclature for Museum Cataloging; and strong
database computer skills. Project success will depend upon the
assistant's ability to work independently and stay on schedule. The
position does involve climbing stairs and short ladders, and lifting
artifacts of all sizes (assistance will be provided for very heavy
objects). The one-year salary position (Jan. - Dec. 2005) pays $12,740
plus free housing at a Historical Society property within walking
distance of the museum and shopping. More information about Geneva is
available at www.geneva.ny.us , and the Historical Society's website is
www.genevahistoricalsociety.com . To apply, please send a cover letter,
resume, and names of three references by November 12 to John Marks,
Curator of Collections, Geneva Historical Society, 543 S. Main Street,
Geneva, NY 14456.
