Our loan requests go to the assigned registrar, who works up an initial file---compiling and reviewing facilities reports, assigning loan conditions, and reviewing schedule.
The registrar must see it all the way through the approval process from there... from registrar to conservator... to Chief Registrar... to curator (of whatever collection the piece falls under)... to Chief Curator... to Deputy Director... and finally to Director.
Not over yet... if the current value is a certain amount or over, the exec. committee needs to approve too.
If the piece was bought with money from a certain group or fund (about 1/3rd of the time), the board of that particular group has to be located, polled, and sign off.
This can take ages. As a registrar, I just want them to okay it or axe it, and move on. But everyone else has to consider 'if I lend this then they promise we can have so and so for this show, and if we lend to this we might become a venue, let's lend to the 1st venue and the 3rd, but not the 2nd and 4th, they never lent us this, so they can't have this, we can't give them this becauase of condition, but lets offer this...'.
Wheeeee! :)
